After a two-year journey, Ford has taken its place among the world’s best after achieving a milestone that has long eluded American automakers: recording a sub-seven-minute lap at the hallowed Nürburgring Nordschleife. Mustang GTD joins an exclusive group of only a handful of cars from Porsche and Mercedes-AMG to have ever accomplished the feat. The run also fulfills a promise made by Ford President and CEO Jim Farley, who proclaimed Mustang GTD would beat the best European automakers on their turf upon its debut last year.

With Ford Mustang GT3/GTD Factory Driver Dirk Müller recording a lap time of 6:57.685, Mustang GTD becomes only the sixth stock, production sports car to complete an officially certified sub-seven-minute lap and the fifth fastest in the production sports car class, according to the Nürburgring’s records.

“The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars,” Farley said.

We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD. We’ll be back.

The new “Road to the Ring” documentary, released in full today, chronicles the history-making run with the new Mustang GTD – the most advanced, audacious Mustang ever – and the challenges the team faced at the track known as “The Green Hell,” success at which is considered the gold standard in sports car development.

The 14-minute film features several interviews with key figures, including Farley, as well as Mustang GTD team members like driver Dirk Müller, Executive Vice President of Multimatic Special Vehicle Operations Larry Holt, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall, and Mustang GTD Design Manager Anthony Colard, as well as other members of the Ford and Multimatic team. The documentary also includes ride-along footage from Müller’s point of view as he navigates the 12.9-mile track.
