Ford South Africa Unveils the All-New Transit Custom Sport

Mar 06, 2025

Ford South Africa recently hosted an exciting launch event for the introduction of the new Transit Custom Sport. Positioned to merge the practicality of a commercial van with sporty aesthetics and robust performance, the media drive event, which took place at the end of February demonstrated how the vehicle would meet the needs of its intended audience, owner-operators and lifestyle-focused customers who desire a standout vehicle.

The launch event, hosted by the Communications team, was an epic road trip with 20 key media members participating over two rotations. The adventure kicked off in Johannesburg, with the convoy of Transit Sports heading southward through the scenic landscapes of Welkom, Bloemfontein, and onwards to the picturesque Gariep Dam.

As the journey unfolded, the team took the opportunity to pause and appreciate the breathtaking beauty of South Africa's diverse landscapes. From the golden fields of the Free State to the serene waters of the Gariep Dam, each stop along the route offered a moment to soak in the natural splendour, highlighting the rich tapestry of the country's geography and culture.

Each vehicle was thoughtfully packed with a treasure trove of books, destined for the Eastern Cape. Upon arrival, the dedicated Rally to Read team took over to ensure these books reached local schools, nurturing a love for reading and learning in communities.

Rally to Read is an inspiring initiative focused on enhancing literacy and education in rural South African schools. The organisation provides vital resources and support to underprivileged areas, making a significant impact on educational development.

The second leg of the journey saw the media traveling from Port Elizabeth towards Mthatha, delivering wheeled walking frames to hospitals, including Nompumelelo Hospital in Peddie, Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, Mthatha Madzikane Memorial Hospital, KwaBacha, Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Regional Hospital before concluding in KwaZulu-Natal. The frames, built by Ford employees, are designed to assist children with mobility impairments, highlighting Ford's commitment to community support.

Thanks to all team members involved for ensuring a successful event and making a difference in so many lives along the way.

Media Impressions

The Transit Custom Sport left a lasting impression on the media, with Jaco van der Merwe from The Citizen noting, “It’s hard to believe that there was a gap between plush people movers and cargo carriers in the van segment. Yet the Ford Transit Custom Sport has forged a gap between the two.”

Jason Woosey from IOL remarked, “Following the long journey my driving partner and I were surprisingly free of fatigue, thanks to the supportive seats, comfortable ride quality and impressive noise insulation. Apart from the tall driving position, it hardly felt like we were driving a commercial van.”

Deon Van Der Walt from Top Gear highlighted the van’s safety features: “Spending hours behind the wheel, navigating remote backgrounds between hospitals, dodging potholes, winding through mountain passes, and sidestepping wandering livestock and the occasional careless pedestrian is where the Transit Custom Sport’s standard features list came into its own.”
