How Ford is Expanding Charging Options for Electric Vehicle Owners

Mar 11, 2025

When we launched our complimentary Fast Charging Adapter (NACS) program in 2024 for a limited time, our team put a phrase on the top of every single box shipped to a customer: “Our Gift, Just For You.” And on the inside, CEO Jim Farley penned a personal note to all our customers that celebrated the fact that Ford was helping to unlock access to thousands of Tesla Superchargers and, in turn, unlocking access to more charging options for Ford electric vehicle owners.

As Ford’s director of Charging & Energy Services, this concept of "unlocking access" has been central to our team’s mission for both current and future electric vehicle owners. Because this initiative was more than just sending out adapters — it was a sign of our commitment to delivering a seamless charging experience away from home and making it easier than ever to confidently go electric with Ford.

We are proud to share that we have fulfilled our commitment to deliver complimentary adapters. Every complimentary adapter reserved by our U.S. customers has been shipped. From customer reservation No. 1 in Austin, Texas, to customer reservation #139,936 in Waconia, Minnesota, we are truly grateful for those who have charged with us (and patiently waited for us).

With the addition of the Ford NACS Fast Charging Adapter, when traveling on most highways in the U.S., Ford customers are within 18 miles of a DC fast charger in the BlueOval Charge Network.

What We’ve Unlocked for Our Customers

According to a 2023 survey of new electric vehicle owners in the U.S., more than 85% of electric vehicle charging conveniently happens at home. However, we also know that making charging away from home easy helps remove one of the biggest customer concerns to adopting an electric vehicle. And our data shows that we’re making a real-world difference for our customers.

In 2024, Ford became the first automaker to gain access to the Tesla Supercharger network in the U.S. for its electric vehicle customers. And we can clearly see the impact this is having. Ford electric vehicle customers now have access to more than 20,000 Tesla Superchargers, up from the initial 15,300 available Superchargers at launch in 2024.

Meanwhile, our customers’ usage of the Tesla Supercharger network continues to grow. In February 2025, Ford electric vehicle owners reached an all-time high number of visits to Tesla Superchargers. Telsa Superchargers now account for nearly 20% of all charging visits away from home for Ford electric vehicle owners.

These numbers are exciting to see, but they’re not the most rewarding. What’s rewarding is hearing from all our customers about how they’re taking advantage of this new freedom.

Mark and June Eakin, F-150 Lightning owners, shared:

“This year, it was easier to charge on the go. In fact, half of our [road trip] charging was at Tesla Superchargers, which allowed us to plan routes that would not have been practical last year.” Read Mark and June’s story.

BlueOval Charge Network Expansion

This gift is an expression of our appreciation for your loyalty as we continue working to improve the overall electric vehicle experience.
Jim Farley

One of the areas where we have continued to invest and improve is the BlueOval Charge Network. The growth we’ve seen from the start of 2024 has been remarkable.

BlueOval Charge Network is the largest integrated public charging network in North America, now with more than 44,000 DC fast chargers available. This is a more than 53% increase from the number of DC fast chargers available to our customers in early 2024, which means our customers are now able to charge faster in more locations.

Our customers are also benefiting from the reliability improvements our partners continue to make across the network. The first-time charge success rate for our customers on the network was the highest it’s ever been in February 2025, meaning a more reliable charging experience away from home.

And we’ve seen these expansions and improvements come to life in the way our customers are using the network — the number of charging sessions on the BlueOval Charge Network this past December holiday nearly doubled from 2023.

With more charging locations, better reliability, and seamless integration, we’re delivering on our commitment to making charging more convenient.

A Ford-Developed Fast Charging Adapter

One key learning from our complimentary adapter program? Our customers want access to a durable, reliable, and Ford-specific NACS adapter to help make charging away from home easy.

That’s why, starting today, the Ford Fast Charging Adapter (NACS)—co-developed with Lectron—is available for purchase here: Ford Fast Charging Adapter (NACS).

This adapter was designed with Ford-specific reliability, robustness, and ergonomic requirements in mind. It’s built to deliver a great charging experience, every time. Watch the video below to hear more from our engineering team about how it came to life.
