Ford Philanthropy, Dealers Tackle Auto Tech Shortage with Expanded Scholarships

Mar 17, 2025

The auto industry continues to lose experienced auto techs faster than it can replace them and can't fill the newly created positions needed to service more technologically advanced vehicles. Even with the high earning potential that comes with being a skilled auto tech, experts now project a shortage of more than 400,000 positions in the U.S. by 2028.

In response to this trend, Ford Philanthropy and Ford dealers are expanding their Auto Tech Scholarship program. Launched in 2023, the program helps make automotive technician careers more accessible, building a more capable workforce to better serve customers, and attract the next generation of skilled workers.

This year's program – a partnership between Ford Philanthropy, the U.S. Ford Dealer network, and the TechForce Foundation – is offering $5,000 scholarships to 800 potential automotive technicians from across the country. This year, the program is available across 42 states and for students attending nearly 600 schools. In addition to tuition assistance, scholarship funds can be used to cover day-to-day related expenses like living and transportation, childcare, and tools needed for class and more.

“This program is an investment in our customers and the people who will drive the future of our industry,” said Ford Chief Dealer Engagement Officer, Elena Ford. “Together with our dealers, we are creating educational opportunities that will make a lasting impact on the communities we serve.”

Participation from Ford dealers has been instrumental to the program’s success. An initial $1 million investment in 2023 quickly doubled to a $2 million investment in 2024, which has again doubled in 2025 to $4 million. Dealers fund half of the total, and Ford Philanthropy matches those contributions.

This year, the program is available across 42 states and for students attending nearly 600 schools. In addition to tuition assistance, scholarship funds can be used to cover day-to-day related expenses like living and transportation, childcare, and tools needed for class and more.

“The scholarships offer a comprehensive support system,” says Alex Shelton, Ford Philanthropy education portfolio manager. “Our aim is to relieve some of the financial barriers that often prevent talented individuals from pursuing their dreams.”

“It’s been very freeing,” said scholarship recipient Mustafa Alhefady. “It gives me that drive to keep going to school and get good grades. It makes me excited to keep moving my career forward.”

Instructors are also taking note of the scholarship’s impact within their classrooms.

“This program is changing my students’ experiences in school,” says automotive technology instructor, Rocky Roberts. “It's empowering my students to see the rewards and long-term opportunities of the field.”

TechForce Foundation, a national non-profit committed to supporting students in technical professions and Ford Philanthropy partner, oversees the application and selection process.

Students looking for a hands-on career with six-figure earning potential can apply through September.
