Meet Anqi Li, an interior designer at Ford Australia whose journey began in the aisles of a bookstore, captivated by architectural design magazines. "I've always loved design," Anqi says, "but my understanding of it has evolved. I used to be fascinated by the grand scale of architecture, its psychological impact. Now, I'm all about the details, the craftsmanship – the power of 'less is more'".

After a decade at Ford, Anqi says she still thrives on the challenge of reimagining a legacy brand. "It's like breathing new life into iconic designs," she explains. "We're taking Ford's rich heritage and making it relevant for today's world, reflecting current needs and values."

And it's not just about hardware anymore. "Cars are so much more than just transportation now," Anqi points out. "As interiors become more complex, we're designing for a broader user experience, going beyond just getting from point A to point B."

Anqi was heavily involved in the design of Ranger and Everest’s doors and centre console and one element she’s particularly proud of is the integration of the door and grab handle to make opening the door a one-handed operation. “We wanted Ranger and Everest to offer practical solutions to everyday issues,” she says.

Her work on Ranger and Everest was "a huge learning curve," she says, "but I feel like I've grown as a person through those projects.

Speaking of projects, Anqi's passion extends beyond the office. During the pandemic, she tackled a home renovation, designing a studio space. "It was a reminder of how good design can transform any environment," she says, "and how important those nitty-gritty details are!" Her favourite spot? The deck connecting the old and new sections of her house – a perfect play area for her son and a relaxing gathering place for friends and family.

When she's not immersed in sketches and material samples, Anqi finds inspiration in a surprising place: classic films. "I love how directors like those behind 'Cinema Paradiso' (a personal favourite) could create such magic with storytelling and cinematography, without relying on special effects."

As a designer and a mum, Anqi feels a responsibility to create a better future. "I'm excited about exploring sustainable materials," she says, "pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly design without compromising style." So, next time you're admiring the interior of a Ford, remember Anqi – the designer who's not just crafting car interiors, but crafting experiences.
