DUNTON, UK – Ford’s Dunton Campus welcomed London Fire Brigade on site recently to gain a better understanding of how to deal with electric vehicles involved in collisions.

The firefighters, from Barking White Watch, spent a day at Dunton learning how EV’s react differently to internal combustion engine vehicles in emergency situations and potential fire risks caused by accident damage.

Ford’s Zachary Corcoran and Sean Marsh led the training which included a technical presentation, a Q & A session, as well as a physical examination of a hybrid vehicle in the workshop.

Rebecca Draper, Leading Firefighter of Barking White Watch, said: “As electric vehicles become more common on our roads, we need to be prepared for the risks they bring and how they differ from petrol and diesel vehicles when attending emergencies.”

Ford’s Adam Whiting, who works in Dunton’s West Wing Advanced Propulsion Laboratory, also organised an EV drive event so the firefighters could get behind the wheel of Mustang Mach-E and the new all-electricExplorer.

He said: “It was a privilege to be able to organise a well-earned treat for such a great team for all their help in the community.”

Darren Balshaw, station officer, Barking White Watch, commented: “We all took a lot away from the visit. We are all better informed about EV’s and the implications of incidents we may encounter involving these. I loved the drive, the Mustang Mach-E was superb, a real pleasure to drive.”
