“Like Ford, we’re committed to helping people move forward and upward, giving them the freedom to thrive,” says Franco Valencia, a Ford Philanthropy Fellow from Mexico and CEO of Prothesia. Inspired by his family's medical generosity and a university project aimed at improving mobility for children with cerebral palsy, Franco founded Prothesia in 2017. The organization has partnered with 24 clinics and serves over 14,000 patients in Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, offering affordable 3D-printed orthotics and prosthetics.
This year, the Ford Philanthropy Fellowship supported 47 passionate entrepreneurs, Franco among them, who are helping transform communities across the U.S., Germany, Mexico, China, Romania, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. A collaboration between Ford Philanthropy and the Watson Institute, the fellowship empowers impact-driven leaders with hands-on experience, mentorship, and networks during a 16-week virtual leadership development program. This summer, the fellows celebrated their achievements in mobility, transportation, and accessibility during a summit with attendees from 39 countries.
Transforming Rest for Families
During the pandemic, Sierra Boone, a Detroit resident and Ford Philanthropy Fellow, noticed how shifts in family dynamics and overstimulating media were causing disconnection among kids. “It takes a village to raise a child, and understanding the holistic importance of rest led us to create The Nap Time Show,” says Sierra, creator of the kids’ series and executive producer at Boom Productions, a family-owned children's television company.
Sierra’s most memorable fellowship experience was facilitating a retreat in Detroit that brought together families, childcare professionals, and government agencies to collaborate on childcare solutions. Similarly, she aims to bring generations together through The Nap Time Show, offering immersive and calming experiences that teach healthy sleeping habits.
Reflecting on the community aspect of the fellowship, Sierra notes, “The relationships I’ve built throughout the program were life changing.” Like Sierra, Franco valued the connections with fellow entrepreneurs internationally. “The path as a founder can feel lonely, but this program has shown me I have a team,” he said.
