Müller ascended up the class order to as high as second in the opening stint; however, contact during Hand's stint caused body damage which required pit-side repairs.

On the opening lap of the race, Mike Rockenfeller was involved in a turn-five incident with a competitor which forced the No. 64 to pit and, one lap later, returned to the garages for right-front suspension repairs. The team was assessed a drive-through penalty for the incident, returning eight laps down.
