The Phenomenon of Mustang

More than 10 million Mustangs have been sold over the last 60 years.

To put that number into perspective, if you took all the Mustangs Ford has sold globally since the pony car was introduced in 1964 and parked them end to end, the distance would be greater than a trip around the Earth’s equator!

Pretty impressive.

What’s even more impactful is the value that the legendary sports car continues to bring to Ford. As Mustang aficionado John Clor points out, however, the importance of Mustang to the Ford business extends well beyond standard metrics like volume and revenue.

“Mustang isn’t just a Ford car that’s been sold for decades.  It’s a global icon that has earned Ford global awareness and recognition that is worth far more than just selling the yearly sheet metal,” said Clor, Enthusiast Communications manager, Ford Performance, author of Mustang Dynasty, Mustang 2015, and host of Mustang Owner’s Podcast.

“Mustang’s worldwide appeal has won Ford new customers on six continents for decades, and our CKS data shows that Mustang owners will not only influence more Ford sales than any other vehicle we sell, but also that they have a vastly higher Ford ownership share than any other buyers, with most Mustang owners having three, four, five or even more other Fords in their driveway,” he said.

Clor said Mustang is a primary reason Ford has such a high annual brand loyalty rating, despite our shrinking market share. And it is one of the few cars in the world that has been continuously celebrated by owner groups each year all over the globe, with millions of fans driving new consumers into Ford’s purchase funnel with every event they host because of the car’s unparalleled exposure.

“Simply put, Mustang is an automotive cultural phenomenon whose half-century of legendary market value cannot be replicated at any price by any company – even today by Tesla or Toyota,” said Clor.

Some people ask why the Mustang does not wear the blue Ford Oval badge like other Ford vehicles.

“Mustang enthusiasts will tell you that’s because Mustang IS Ford,” said Clor. “The Mustang spirit defines Ford’s 121 years of innovation – today and into the foreseeable future!”
