Sales of the all-new Ford Ranger are up more than 10% year over year, and now Ford has added a new, available 2.7-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine option to the lineup. The engine is built at Lima Engine Plant in Ohio, while Ranger is produced at Michigan Assembly Plant for the North American market. Media members recently drove the new 2.7-liter engine for the first time, and below is a sampling of their take:

Raves

“Ford drops its award-winning 2.7L EcoBoost V-6 into the midsize Ranger, giving the pickup a significant boost, especially in low-end torque.” WardsAuto

“The new 2.7-liter EcoBoost is an immediate highlight for the range, delivering more performance and a markedly more premium feel. … The new V-6 brings genuine grunt. I would be spending the cash for the extra urge, if one was destined for my garage.”Road & Track

“For just a couple grand or so extra, Ford’s V-6 gives the Ranger the type of scoot typically reserved for big performance players like the Raptor ... the optional powertrain does elevate the standard Ranger without nosing it too close to the Raptor's $57,315 starting price.”Car and Driver

“At our test track, the Ranger is quicker than its midsize rivals, the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado and Nissan Frontier, though that was true even before the V6 became available.” – Edmunds

“The 2.7L EcoBoost will also never be confused with its larger 3.5L EcoBoost cousins … But its twin-turbo torque curve is simply wonderful.”Ford Truck Enthusiasts

Rants

“The Ford Ranger might be one of our favorite midsize trucks, but unless you're going all in on the Raptor, the four-cylinder engine is still the way to go.” – Edmunds

“Don't expect lots of muscular noises, however, as the V-6 is often muted. Push hard on the gas pedal and the engine produces some gruff tones and turbo whistle, but it stays quiet the rest of the time.” – Road & Track

“The only drawback is fuel economy. If you drive carefully, you’re looking to drop somewhere between 1-3 mpg versus the 2.3L.” – Ford Truck Enthusiasts
