Henry Ford put the world on wheels when he built the Model T. Today, members of the Ford of Mexico team are taking a page from his playbook by helping put handicapped animals on wheels too.

Inspired by the performance and capability of the F-150 Raptor, a cross-functional team – including Benjamin Dueñas, Santiago Muleiro, Tania Cirilo, Luis Perez, Luis Miranda and Jesua Garcilazo – created P-Raptor, a wheelchair designed for dogs (perros in Spanish) with limited mobility.

Dueñas, an interaction designer, said P-Raptor meets the needs of dogs with limited mobility like no other animal wheelchair. It has adaptable modular traction and exceptional support that allows the use of the front or rear axles.

With P-Raptor, we demonstrate our commitment to a more inclusive and supportive society.

“The biggest challenge was to define a creative idea that could respond to the mobility needs of different puppies, which is why P-Raptor is a modular design, so it can be adapted to different sizes and needs,” he said.

The P-Raptor wheelchair will be available for 3D printing next year and can be customized according to the dog’s size.

“The reason for using 3D printing technology is to provide (a) greater number of people and associations with access to P-Raptor,” said Muleiro, Product Development engineering designer. “This type of printing has become more popular in recent years and costs have been reduced, making it a more accessible product.”

Ford of Mexico cares about accessible mobility for everyone, including pets.

“With P-Raptor, we demonstrate our commitment to a more inclusive and supportive society,” said Dueñas.
