Ford of Mexico has been recognized for the second consecutive year with the “Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL)” award by GEN Industrial and the Association of Waste Professionals (DS Latinoamericana) in collaboration with organizations including the Mexico City Ministry of the Environment, Works, and Services.
Ford is the only automotive company in Mexico to receive the ZWTL award. Since 2014, all Ford plants in Mexico send zero waste to landfills, and the Global Technology and Business Center (GTBC) in the State of Mexico was designed the same way before its inauguration.
Reducing waste has a dual benefit. Not only does it reduce our impact on the planet, but it also optimizes efficiency in our resource-intensive industry.
Achieving – and maintaining – zero waste to landfill is not an easy task. Each year there may bring variations in waste streams, either due to changes in processes or the specific characteristics of waste. Environmental engineers throughout Ford of Mexico work together with the Environmental Quality Office to manage and monitor waste flow on a regular basis. Recently, a color-coding system was implemented to help identify and separate the waste that is sent to recycling, recovery, composting, co-processing and other destinations.
In Mexico, the population produces 102,895 tons per day, equivalent to 53.1 million tons per year. Landfills produce excess greenhouse gases that cause global warming and pollute large land areas. The effort to reduce waste and recover energy and materials illustrates the Ford of Mexico commitment to making our workplaces, and our world, a better place.
